Volcano watching, more zip lining

Volcano watching. Can’t get a room with a view any closer to the Arenal Volcano than this one

When we were in Costa Rica about 5 years ago, we took a day trip to the Arenal Volcano and saw nothing, not even the outline of it, it was so fogged in. Disappointing to say the least. During this stay in Costa Rica we decided to try again but we upped our odds of seeing it by staying for a couple of nights at the hotel with the best view of the new lava flow, the Arenal Observatory Lodge.

The fact that it’s the rainy season didn’t increase our odds much but we lucked out, managed to see the peak for a brief moment yesterday afternoon. No luck seeing the red lava at night though, it was totally fogged in...at least when we woke up to look.

Can’t imagine what it’s like to see the volcano on a totally clear day or night. I’m sure we’d be awestruck because what we saw was impressive enough!

Spent most of our time there sitting out on the deck, listening to birds, bugs, frogs etc. We also thought we heard fireworks but as the night went on, we realized we were hearing eruptions in the volcano. Some of the noises we heard even sounded like lava bubbling...I kid you not. It’s eerie knowing that you’re that close to a very active volcano. Seeing the lava and hearing those noises together at night would be incredible. Oh well, next trip back here will have to be in the DRY season.

The zip line at arenal is highly recommended so we decided to give it a try. Totally different experience than the one we did last week. Less lines (only 8) but longer, higher and faster. Got our adrenaline fix in for the week. The design of these zip lines is such that you don’t have to break using your glove. Supposedly safer but to be honest, we felt like it removed some of the fun from it. Especially after all the heavy duty breaking we had to do in the rain last week on the other zip line!

Couldn’t say if one zip line was better than the other because they were very different experiences in totally different terrain. Both fun!
